Overview
A Game-Changing Machine in the Mining Sector
The large mining truck 785 was Caterpillar's first entry into the mining industry over three decades ago and has since proven itself on sites worldwide. And now, it is the first to combine revolutionary efficiency with cutting-edge physical availability to offer the new generation of productive transportation. It all starts with the operator, who is in an advanced environment designed for efficiency and equipped with functions that enhance comfort, automate tasks, provide real-time information, and build confidence. The 785 also brings significant improvements in maintenance ease and reliability, increased connectivity, and easier technological integration. These improvements — and many more — allow an already proven truck to reach a higher level of productivity.
Advantages
Up to 5% Reduction in Cycle Times
With wider tires, a high-power option, and improved shifting and acceleration with the APECS transmission.
34% More Space for Operators
17% wider, 11% more legroom, and 19% more shoulder space than D series models.

- Driver's comfort
- Efficiency and productivity of the driver
- Ease of maintenance
- Cat Bins
- Durability
- Versatility
The productivity
The Advanced Power Electronic Control Strategy (APECS) allows for faster cycle times through more continuous torque and rim force. Forward impulses and torque are maintained with each gear change, with optimal gear selection allowing for faster acceleration. The 785 offers a 6% higher TKPH/TMPH (tonne-kilometer-hour/tonne-mile-hour) thanks to larger tires that allow mines to benefit from higher speeds, especially in flat, long-distance, and high-speed applications. Productivity optimization features such as hill start assist with anti-rollback function, optimized traction control, dynamic stability control (DSC), anti-lock braking system (ABS), speed limiting, and machine cruise control enhance machine responsiveness and maneuverability while optimizing cycle times and reducing driver fatigue.
Security
Large non-slip surfaces and handrails, as well as an optional motorized access ladder, improve access and exit. A patented braking system provides immediate and constant braking and deceleration, improving maneuverability. Visibility is improved by an optional 360-degree Surround View camera, which provides a bird's-eye view. The Cat MineStar™ object detection system combines radar and camera systems to alert the driver of the presence of light vehicles or stationary hazards in close proximity. The driver safety system (optional) alerts the driver if signs of fatigue or distraction are detected.
Driver's comfort
The cabin offers 34% more space for the driver compared to models in the D series. It is 17% wider, offers 11% more legroom, and 19% more shoulder space. The controls, levers, and switches are arranged to facilitate their use. With a reduced sound pressure level (SPL) of 40%, automatic temperature regulation, and cabin filtration, the driver benefits from a safer and more comfortable environment. A walk-through cabin with a fully adjustable center console, an easy-to-adjust seat, and increased legroom make this cabin an ideal tool for drivers of all sizes. The next-generation seat is compatible for four-point restraint and incorporates features such as tilt and extension of the thigh area, adjustable lumbar support and reinforcement with pneumatic suspension, as well as heated and cooled cushions. Operators benefit from a more comfortable driving experience thanks to smoother transitions and reduced jerk levels in gear changes with APECS controls.
Efficiency and productivity of the driver
High-resolution screens improve access to information. Machine data, commands, and guidance information are grouped on two ideally located 10-inch screens. The AutoHoist function (optional) automatically raises the bucket and controls the engine speed, simplifying operations and reducing cycle times. The speed framing provides the driver with real-time feedback on how to drive the dump truck to optimize productivity. The payload monitoring system has more precise measurements, providing immediate feedback to the driver.
Ease of maintenance
The new modular heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) system is more reliable and combines components to allow for quick removal and replacement. A modular radiator reduces the time for engine removal and installation, allowing for exterior renovations of the dump truck. New remote update and remote troubleshooting features provide immediate access to the latest software updates and allow for remote diagnosis of anomalies. The time spent on regular maintenance procedures is reduced thanks to features such as extended interval filters with ground-level access, grouped maintenance points, optional centralized maintenance center, cleaner hydraulic and electrical routing, SOS and pressure ports for faster and safer oil sampling and troubleshooting, and fluid level indicators. A 100% air-free electric start option eliminates the need for machine air system maintenance and improves productivity time.
Cat Bins
The bodies designed and manufactured by Caterpillar are integrated into the chassis as a unit in order to optimize performance and incorporate optional Tier 4 components, including body exhaust heat. The specific mine design (MSD) lightweight body is designed with integrated features for reducing rollback (curved transition of the front wall and corner plates) and is available with optional application-specific body liners. Designed for tough applications, the robust double-slope body ensures excellent load retention, maintains a low center of gravity with optimal load distribution, and reduces shocks.
Durability
The 785 is designed to use less fuel, which reduces engine emissions. Additionally, no fuel is consumed during deceleration. The Tier 4 Final compliant engine reduces NOx and particle emissions. The 12-cylinder engine design of the Cat 3512E utilizes long and efficient strokes for more complete fuel combustion and optimal energy efficiency. The 785 engine is compatible with diesel fuel blended with low carbon intensity fuels such as biofuels and renewable fuels. Features such as oil renewal systems, continuous rear axle filtration, extended-life filters, and longer maintenance intervals reduce the amount of waste disposed into the environment. By refurbishing machines and components, Cat Rebuild and Cat Reman programs preserve raw materials, save energy, and reduce emissions.
Versatility
The 785 is available in a cold weather configuration that makes it ideal for mines operating in icy environments. It features automatic engine thermal management, a variable speed fan for low temperature operation, and the option of electric or pneumatic starting. The 3512E engine allows you to choose the rated power that matches the current performance of your fleet or allows for faster cycles. The 23% net torque reserve provides unmatched overload force during acceleration, on steep slopes, and on uneven terrain. The tire options allow you to select the tire that best suits your application, with a larger tire for flat, long, and high-speed applications. The chassis is designed to maintain the same turning diameter while accommodating larger tires. The 785 is available in two versions to meet emissions standards. The Tier 4 Final engine (optional) meets the strictest standards, while the LRC engine is available in less regulated countries.
